In loving memory of my father, Chris Beales—whose life was devoted to creating a fairer, more compassionate world. HLUK2025 is dedicated to honoring his extraordinary vision and commitment to housing and community welfare. A lifelong Anglican minister and social entrepreneur, Dad believed deeply in the power of faith to drive tangible change, especially in housing. Over his remarkable forty-year career, he pioneered government collaborations with faith communities and brought to life innovative projects addressing housing needs both in the UK and abroad.
Through his work with the Archbishop of Canterbury's Commission on Housing, Church & Community, and notably the impactful Coming Home report, Dad advocated for housing as not just a matter of shelter but one of dignity, stability, and community. He tirelessly championed the idea that the Church could steward its land and resources to create sustainable, affordable homes, partnering with local authorities and developers to realize this vision. His work was rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a place they can call home—a place that is safe, sustainable, and satisfying.
Dad’s passion and faith were at the heart of his life’s mission, which often led him to work long hours setting up charities and social enterprises, fundraising, and supporting countless communities. His voice resonated strongly within the Church and beyond, urging that housing policy should be rooted in the core values of safety, stability, and social responsibility. His influence has inspired the creation of HLUK2025, a platform that brings together diverse voices to continue what he started and to confront the UK’s housing challenges with bold, compassionate solutions.
In his memory, we are honored to host a dedicated panel—The Church of England's Role in Addressing the Housing Crisis—to explore how the Church’s assets and ethical vision can contribute meaningfully to tackling today’s housing crisis. This panel will discuss the Church’s stewardship of land and resources to create affordable housing, fulfilling Dad’s dream of a Church-led movement that uplifts communities and provides hope to those in need.
Dad, your commitment to justice, your courage to question the status quo, and your vision for a just society remain our guiding light. HLUK2025 is just the beginning of your enduring legacy. Thank you for inspiring us all to dream, to build, and to believe in a better future.
